Welcome!
We hope that here you will catch a glimmer of what you have been searching for in a religion: one that will nourish your spirit and at the same time, challenge your mind. It is vitally important to us that through our Sunday worship, adult programs and social justice initiatives we honour the needs of both the head and the heart.
Our Sunday services of worship, which are sometimes referred to as ‘celebrations of life’, offer music, ritual, meditation, a sermon or presentation, community dialogue and singing. There are no ‘have to’s’ in any of our services. We believe in freedom of choice and this also applies to our services. If you happen to be one of those people who don’t like to sing, come out anyway and simply sit back while others do the singing!
Topics covered on Sundays range from “Humanism 101” … to a “Personal Journey to Green Action” … to “When Good Things Happen to Bad People”. We are also currently holding a series of workshops and Sunday Services related to becoming a “Welcoming Congregation” in which we will examine both our conscious and sub-conscious attitudes and concepts of gender identity with the goal of moving toward providing a welcoming and safe environment for all who share our commitment to the principle of the inherent worth and dignity of all persons. We reach out to people where they live, not to offer salvation in a hereafter but rather to offer hope and direction in a here and now.
We are not only a diverse community in ourselves, but we also like lots of variety on Sunday mornings! We sometimes enjoy the violin solos of one of our members, and other times the folk song duets of two other members. We participate in a “Water Communion” in September and a “Maple Syrup” communion at Easter. And always, children are an important part of our church community. In fact, each service begins with the children present with the adult members of the congregation and all are encouraged to share their joys and concerns as they light a candle and tell others of those joys or concerns. There is then a children’s story which is shared with the entire congregation, after which the children retire to a separate space where they follow their own religious exploration and the adults continue to follow theirs.
Something we are asked by people who are thinking about visiting us is: "What do people wear?" The answer is simple. You’ve probably guessed it by now. People wear whatever they want to. The atmosphere here at our little church is very informal. We hope that you will come for a visit and maybe even find a home among us.
To each and every person who reads this message and believes that you might find what you are looking for in our church, whatever your religious background, you are most welcome!
