The idea of Food and Water First is that we need to put food and water above the interests of industrial or residential development in Ontario. It is a growing movement with lots of energy and organization. Their efforts are attracting a wide range of support and interest throughout the province. The strategy is to lobby the Provincial Government to prevent the re-zoning and development of class one farmland or areas that have source water anywhere in Ontario.
Donna Tranquada is from Toronto First Unitarian Church. Her prior involvement in a social justice issue was the successful "Stop the Mega Quarry" project which saved a large parcel of prime farmland near Shelbourne, Ontario. Highland Corporation withdrew it's application! Those efforts have now evolved into the Food and Water First initiative. As a backdrop to this morning’s social justice theme, Kate Chung (also from Toronto First) will inspire us with songs of political & social activism from the Toronto Raging Grannies group. This is the service you don’t want to miss! We’ll explore a topic normally taboo in church life: money. Join Rev. Fiona for a lively, thought provoking and interactive service on the meaning of money in our lives.
Rev. Fiona Heath is our half-time consulting minister. What happens when those who experience an event such as the war come into conflict with those who remember it as history. This happened as veterans who originally told their story die off and younger people without the emotions of memory take over the story.
John Plumpton is a former president (twice) of Don Heights Unitarian Congregation who has spoken at Durham a number of times. He is a former educator with North York Board of Education and is presently teaching history at the Life Institute (a later-life learning program) at Ryerson University. From the Day of the Dead in Mexico to All Saint’s Day in England, this is the time of year we mourn our dead. We come together this Sunday to remember, grieve and honour the losses in our life, but also call ourselves back to hope. If you would like, please bring a photo of a lost loved one to place on the central altar.
