The idea of Food and Water First is that we need to put food and water above the interests of industrial or residential development in Ontario. It is a growing movement with lots of energy and organization. Their efforts are attracting a wide range of support and interest throughout the province. The strategy is to lobby the Provincial Government to prevent the re-zoning and development of class one farmland or areas that have source water anywhere in Ontario.
Donna Tranquada is from Toronto First Unitarian Church. Her prior involvement in a social justice issue was the successful "Stop the Mega Quarry" project which saved a large parcel of prime farmland near Shelbourne, Ontario. Highland Corporation withdrew it's application! Those efforts have now evolved into the Food and Water First initiative.
As a backdrop to this morning’s social justice theme, Kate Chung (also from Toronto First) will inspire us with songs of political & social activism from the Toronto Raging Grannies group.
